We’ve covered a lot in this WordPress maintenance series, including why it is important, how to update your website, the importance of regular backups, and how to keep your site secure.

That is enough to make your head spin. That’s why we put together a Website Maintenance Checklist so you know exactly what you need to do.

Website Maintenance Checklist

  1. Check For Strong Passwords:
This is step one. Update any passwords that aren’t strong. This is a good thing to revisit at least once a year.
  2. Get an SSL:
If you don’t have an SSL, look into getting one. Often your host will provide a free one, so check with them first.
  3. Backup Your Website:
Before you do anything else on your website, run a full back up. Even more than that, create a schedule for regular backups. We recommend at least monthly. This would be the time to schedule automatic backups so you don’t forget.
  4. Update Your Plugins, Themes and WordPress (if needed):
If you have any updates, be sure to handle them now. This should be done on a regular basis as well, at least monthly but possibly even weekly. Worried about making updates, revisit our top tips here.
  5. Install A WordPress Security Plugin:
Once your site is all backed up and updated, install and set up a security plugin. Our favorite is Wordfence. We make sure to set it up to receive email updates. That way we can check our inbox daily for any red flags or possible issues and handle them ASAP.
  6. Monitor Monitor Monitor:
You should be on your website often. It is important to monitor and make sure nothing looks strange. It is better for you to discover an issue should it arise than a potential website visitor.

Just remember, WordPress maintenance is not a once and done thing. It is a continual process. But when done right and with intention, it can save you possible headaches in the future.
